DESCRIPTION OF COMMITTEES

You can make a difference at Lincoln by participating in volunteer opportunities such as:

Buildings and Grounds: This committee is responsible for improvements to the Lincoln School physical environment. The time involved depends upon the projects that are pursued. The chair organizes playground clean-ups, Saturday workdays and any special needs that arise.

Enrichment: This committee works with the staff and the principal to provide enrichment programs for the students. These programs are designed to enhance the curriculum and include visiting scientists, artists, etc. The time commitment is throughout the year. The chairperson represents the Lincoln community at Community Schools Association (CSA) meetings, an umbrella organization of all school enrichment activities.

Events: The purpose of this committee is to plan and organize Lincoln School family and/or parent events such as school dinners and other activities. The events are usually limited to two per year and the time commitment depends upon the activities planned.

Field Day: This committee is responsible for coordinating with an outside vendor to provide lunch for Field Day participants, teachers, and families. This involves ordering the food; collecting lunch tickets/payments from students; and organizing parent volunteers to cook and serve the lunch. Committee members may also be asked to assist the Physical Education staff to organize parent volunteers and communications. Field Day is usually held in June.

Gifts: This committee selects and purchases gifts for individuals (such as principal, librarian, and nurse) that the LSPA wishes to thank as well as end of year gifts for all teachers and staff. The time commitment is sporadic throughout the year.

Grade 5: This committee organizes the 5th grade activities, such as the pancake breakfast, ice cream social and the moving on ceremony. The time commitment depends upon the event you choose to work on.

Handbook: This position involves working with the principal to revise and publish the Lincoln School Handbook. Computer skills are useful for this position and the work is completed in September. It requires some late spring and summer work.

Junior Great Books: This committee coordinates volunteers and materials for the Junior Great Books program, a literature enrichment program offered to students in January-March.

Library: This is NOT the sign-up for daily library volunteers. This committee is divided into groups, which help organize the many activities of the library. These activities include recruiting and scheduling library volunteers, helping with library duties including book repairs and overdue lists, and organizing the Book Fair, helping in the processing of books, shelf reading and end of year inventory. The time commitment depends upon which event you choose to work on.

Mentor: Serving on this committee requires the coordination and administration of the mentor program for fourth and fifth grade students which culminates in a mentor appreciation event. Work for this committee begins in late November and ends in mid-March. The biggest time commitment is in early January and early March, with the event occurring in mid-March.

Newsletter (1-2): The newsletter committee organizes volunteers and edits material for the Lincletter, a weekly newsletter describing news and activities of Lincoln School. The committee relies on a pool of typists. One or two committee members will be responsible for distributing electronic communications to our school community. Much of the work can be completed at home.

Parent-to-Parent Representative (1): This position requires serving as the LSPA representative to the town-wide Parent-to-Parent organization. The time commitment is 5 meetings per year, in addition to reporting activities and events to the LSPA membership.

Publicity: This committee provides photos and articles to local newspapers on interesting Lincoln School activities. The time commitment varies throughout the year.

Publishing Center: Volunteers for this committee copy, laminate and bind classroom work. The time commitment is about once a month for a two hour shift. This committee works throughout the year, particularly in the spring, preparing for student Authorfest.

Room Parent (2): This committee recruits and selects class Room Parents, who work with the individual teachers. Room parents collect and collate Emergency forms in September. This committee begins work on the first day of school, is most active in early fall and initiates the emergency phone chain when necessary.

School Pictures (2): This committee works with the principal to select a photographer, schedule the picture day and retake day, organizes photo sessions and is present on the picture day. The committee is responsible for distribution of pictures. School pictures are usually taken in the fall.

Social (12-14): This committee provides refreshments for various LSPA functions and meetings. The biggest event is organizing and planning the Teacher/Staff Appreciation Luncheon in May. The committee works throughout the year.

Special Needs (1-2): This committee raises awareness of special education issues to the Lincoln community. The chair also serves as the Lincoln liaison to the Winchester Special Needs PAC. The time commitment is light throughout the year.

Ways and Means: This committee plans, organizes and implements all fundraising activities. The majority of the fundraising is accomplished through a direct appeal. Other fundraising programs (i.e., Target, Box Tops) are also coordinated by this committee. Most of the work for this committee is done in the fall and early winter.
